Create an artful journal from an outdated or otherwise “lonely” book.
This video tutorial started out as 5 Easy Techniques to Use in Art Journals" and quickly turned into Eight Ideas--grin.
Journals open a world of discovery. They are not just for “real” writers or artists; they are for everyone that has thoughts--everyone that desires more meaning and creativity in their lives.
Alter a book into your own artful journal and stretch your creative boundaries. The Renew this book! series guides you with videos, photographs, and written tutorials through the theory and process of creating your own visual journal.
Five Easy Techniques to Try in Art Journals
1. Tape in an extra page--Use strong adhesive (like red line tape) to add another page. Size the add-in page at about 33% of the regular pages in the book.
2. Tape a card onto a page that will open to reveal an additional message or drawing. Store-bought, recycled or handmade cards all work great.
3. DoOdLe! It's all open territory for doodling. Go directly on the page background, doodle into a photo that was published into the book, or paste in your own photos with doodles. The time honored moustache and glasses is always a great start...
4. Torn Paper Piecing with print papers. Use a drawing for inspiration and tear paper into shapes and assemble together.
5. Add pockets by pasting in envelopes--Look for unique shapes and sizes with window panes and writing or jazz up those leftover envelopes from boxed cards. Video shows envelopes I made from old calendar pages.
6. Vary your writing--The words are the art with this technique of using size variations, different pens, and a slew of handwritten fonts.
7. Add "fun stuff"--Use maps, old letters, junk mail, and magazine pages as a base or background for your journal process.
8. Use highlighter pens to create background messages. Write large letters or drawings with a sheer ink highlight pen and then journal over those with your regular writing.
